A history of the United Church of Christ, from the Reformation to the restructuring of 2000. This book chronicles the history of the antecedent groups, Congregational, Reformed, Evangelical, and Christian, and the various racial, ethnic and religious groups that have become part of the United Church of Christ, as well as the history of the United Church of Christ since 1957.
This is the first attempt to tell the story of the UCC as one story, rather than four. Stories of the four major groups and the previously “hidden histories” are woven into one continuous narrative.
This book contains many stories from the history of the UCC that have not often been told. Even the most active life-long pastor in the UCC will learn something new. Because the author has been a local church pastor, and his academic research has been in the history of missions, these two aspects of church life-the local church and missions-receive more than average attention.

The Author
Charles A. Maxfield was ordained into the ministry of the United Church of Christ in 1970, and was a local church pastor until 2001, except for time out for further education. He received a Ph.D. in Church History from Union Theological Seminary in Richmond, Virginia, in 1995. He has participated actively in the lives of his Associations and Conferences, and has served on a committee of General Synod. Dr. Maxfield taught in the History Department of the State University of New York (SUNY)-Cortland, 2001-2008. He now lives in Lansdale, Pennsylvania, and teaches at DeSales University.
