The Statement of Faith was written by a joint commission of persons from the two uniting churches that formed the United Church of Christ. When it was presented to the Second General Synod in 1959, it was adopted unanimously. The Statement is brief enough to be used in worship.
When the United Church of Christ had its consciousness raised with regard to sexist language, a number of attempts were made to rephrase the Statement of Faith in inclusive language. Two new versions of the Statement of Faith were accepted by the Church: One prepared by president Robert Moss, and one in the form of a Doxology, authorized by Executive Council in 1981.
